THE BUENOS AIRES HERALD
by Juan Carlos Fontana
CIRCUS ECHOES
El León de la Metro, by Cecilia Hopkins.
The actress and dancer starts off from the exile of León Trotsky in México, Vich started in 1937 in the famous blou house that belonged to Diego Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo. From that fact, she builds a fictional store about a decadent boxer in a relationship with a woman he forces to dress as Kahlo.
This store of love and abandoment is magnificently acted by Hopkins and León Iskovich. The actress (who also directs the piece) presents an excellent staging that incorporates circus acts, dance and a fantasy framework that brings to mind the melancholy World of Federico Fellini and La Strada’s Gelsomina.
This dramatic journey makes very resourceful use of its minimalistic resources and the magic of the actors to talk about love in a context, if you will, of marginalization and material (never spiritual) poverty.
